OCO Hosts First Annual Sakura Classic Pickleball Tournament and Clinic

OCO hosted its first annual Sakura Classic Pickleball Tournament and Clinic on March 4 and 5. Held at the Tustin Pickleball Courts, the event saw over 110 players register for the tournament, with many partnering with relatives and friends. A total of 10 dedicated courts were utilized, and over 75 spectators were present to cheer on their loved ones.

Medals were awarded to the top three teams, while all players received goodie bags with Japanese snacks, green tea beverages, cooling towels, and other essential pickleball items. Over $2,000 worth of merchandise and donations were generously provided by players.

Roger Kinoshita chaired the event, with committee members Glenn Tanaka, Gary Itano, and Brian Lee assisting him.

The clinic, led by Johnny Cheng, had over 30 adults and 20 children learning the sport. With the youngest participant being 6 and the oldest 60+ years old, pickleball is truly a sport for the entire family.

Volunteer instructors included regional and national champions, a certified instructor, and many advanced players, making the clinic an ideal opportunity for participants to learn from skilled individuals.

Each participant was given a paddle and balls to take home to perfect their game for the next Sakura Classic tournament.
