Pickleball: Named the Fastest-Growing Sport in America for the Third Consecutive Year

Pickleball has been named the fastest-growing sport in America for the third year in a row, according to the 2023 Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s (SFIA) Topline Participation Report. The report shows that pickleball's popularity is soaring, with an 85.7% year-over-year increase in participation in 2022 and a 158.6% increase over the past three years. The total count of pickleball players in the US now stands at 8.9 million, up from 4.8 million in 2022.

Stu Upson, CEO of USA Pickleball, welcomed the report, saying: "This data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association is valuable for our team’s efforts to build the pickleball community and reach new mainstream audiences, as the sport collectively reaches new heights."

The SFIA Topline Participation Report provides an overview of all sports, fitness, and recreation activities in the US for the previous year, and SFIA is a leading supplier of sports and fitness research, publishing over 100 industry reports annually on industry and product categories. A detailed SFIA report on pickleball will be released soon.

The growth of pickleball has been nothing short of phenomenal, with the number of participants almost doubling in 2022 alone. Although the APP Tour report earlier this year estimated the number of players to be closer to 8.5 million, the SFIA report shows that pickleball is still the fastest-growing sport in America.
