Washington State Senate Approves Specialty License Plates Commemorating Pickleball and Mount St. Helens

The Washington State Senate has passed two bills approving the creation of specialty license plates to commemorate pickleball and Mount St. Helens. Senate Bill 5333 would authorize a plate recognizing pickleball as the official state sport, with the proceeds going towards building and maintaining dedicated pickleball courts. The Seattle Metro Pickleball Association would manage the trust account. The bill was passed by a vote of 45-4 and was sponsored by Senator John Lovick, D-Mill Creek.

The second bill, Senate Bill 5590, would create a specialty plate to commemorate Mount St. Helens, the state's most active volcano. Proceeds from the sale of these plates would go to the Mount St. Helens Institute, a private nonprofit organization, to support youth education, land stewardship and science related to the volcano. This bill was sponsored by Senator Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver, and passed by a vote of 47-2.

The state of Washington already offers a variety of specialty license plates that celebrate different aspects of the state, including the military, sports teams, colleges, parks, firefighters, farmers, elk, orcas, lighthouses, the state flower, square dancers, and wine.
